Malija with Mark Lockheart @ The Everyman Studio Theatre, Regent Street Cheltenham, GL50 1HQ.

A trio tonight, but not just any old trio! It’s headed up by Mark Lockheart, remember him from Loose Tubes? Not only Loose Tubes, but also Perfect Houseplants and Polar Bear. So, what’s he doing with a trio? An invitation to perform at the New York Rochester Jazz Festival in 2014 led to this group – ‘Malija’ with bassist Jasper Hoiby and pianist Liam Noble.

Liam is a name that keeps popping up at the BBC, after Oxford and the Guildhall he broke upon the public in the mid 90s. He’s played with a lot of the jazz world, including Bobby Wellins, so his pedigree must be in order!

On bass we have a new name, Jasper Hoiby, Jasper is a Danish bassist who moved to London in 2001 to study at the Royal Academy, after which he slotted into the London scene. Jasper started on the electric bass graduating to the string bass when he started at the RA. He was part of the Phronesis, a Scandinavian trio that was, apparently fuelled by coffee (strong)!

This sounds like a heady blend, so bear in mind that the Studio is small, so book and don’t miss it!
