It is now well into April and we are not fooling around, this gig is what’s known, in the trade, as the real deal! Art Themen is one of our greatest modern jazzmen. As John Fordham says “an appealing presence on the British jazz circuit for over 40 years…. Originally a Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins disciple … Themen has proved himself remarkably attentive to the saxophone styles of subsequent generations.” If that’s not enough, He’s a really nice bloke!
Art is also bringing with him a virtual who’s who of British jazz, starting, on piano, Gareth Williams. Described as “jewel of a player… spinning out luminous introductions and codas” by Jazziz Magazine (USA). Gareth has been here several times and each performance has been a gem.
On trumpet a name, possibly new to us, Neil Yates. Neil’s path has been via Salford Uni and the Guildhall. He is heavily involved in jazz in the North, especially North Wales where he is Artistic Director of the rather special LLandudno Jazz Festival.
On bass, Arnie Somogyi, great to have Arnie back, he has been playing for us more years than most people would care to remember! Another guy from the Guildhall he is now back in education, now teaching as a visiting tutor at Birmingham Conservatoire and at the Guildhall, The Royal Academy of Music and Trinity College. (As well as the occasional gig!)
Drums, after a long absence of exactly one month, we welcome back Winstone Clifford. (Well I did say he is one of our favourite drummers)
This is going to be a very special gig, close up and personal in the very special Everyman Studio Theatre; size limited so be sure to book well in advance.
Tickets are £16.00 from the box office: 01242 572573 or on line: www.everymantheatre.org.uk
