The summer holidays are over and we are all eagerly looking forward to autumn and ultimately winter! Happily, tonight we have Nat Steele with us with their “Portrait of the MJQ”
Nat was first with us in the October of 2014 with David Newton. But tonight he will front the gig in tribute of his hero, Milt Jackson. He plays a vintage 1964 Deagan Aurora II Vibraharp (the same model as used by Milt Jackson) and uses Albright “Milt Jackson” model mallets. Interestingly, Nat uses only two mallets thus concentrating on using the instrument as a front line not a rhythm device.
On Piano tonight we have Gabriel Latchin, A new name to us, I think. Gabriel was born in London, did economics at Edinburgh. Obviously decided that playing jazz is more rewarding!
His pet hate: “I’m not a huge fan of fakers – guys who can’t play but try to wear the right hat and say the right thing.” I think he sounds nicely balanced!
On Bass we have Dario di Lecce, Dario moved to London in 2012 and soon became firmly established in the hard bop scene where he has played with a raft of names.
Drums, a more familiar name, Matt Home, it’s been a while since Matt has been here and, wait for it, he will be back next month with Alan Barnes! Born in Huddersfield,West Yorkshire in 1973, Matt started with the trumpet when he was six but switched to drums at 8, taking drum lessons at school. Now based in London and again, playing with everybody, including Alan Barnes!
This is going to be one of those great gigs and it’s in the great ballroom at the Victory Club. Don’t miss it and bring your friends (everyone loves the MJQ!)
Tickets (cash/chq only) £16, CJ Members/Concessions £14.Available at the door.
